The Noise Next Door - Their Finest Hour **** SG Fringe Review

the-noise-next-door-at-edi2The Noise Next Door - Their Finest Hour - 2011 Edinburgh Fringe Show Review
“The Noise Next Door are attractive, talented, quick-witted and quick-thinking…astonishing talent” **** SG Fringe

Date of live review: Tuesday 9th Aug, ‘11

Improvised comedy, like anything, is not everyone’s cup of tea, although credit must be given to the pure skill, inventiveness and genius of those who manage to pull it off successfully. The Noise Next Door are in this improvisation elite, and their show this year really is their finest hour.

The pre-choreographed routines and song templates had the audience in stitches which is encouraging as these are some of the very few fixed features of the show which won’t change with each performance. Equally though, the excitement of improvised comedy such as this is that each performance will be different based on audience suggestions, and The Noise Next Door make the most of the bizarre suggestions thrown at them. The downside to this unpredictability is that during some of the more challenging and unusual scenes the performers have a tendency to break focus and laugh at themselves, although in one scene they go through intensive conditioning to beat this lack of control out of them! The only other negatives surrounding this show was that one or two sketches/songs perhaps went on a bit too long; and a couple of minor technical errors distracted from the astonishing talent being presented on stage.

The five boys of The Noise Next Door are attractive, talented, quick-witted and quick-thinking, and I don’t doubt that they have an extremely promising future both here at the Fringe and out on the wider circuit.

Geoff Norcott is Good in a Crisis – Etcetera Theatre Show Review

‘memorable anecdotes and laughs a plenty’ On the Fringe

“With successful credits in TV, radio and beyond the well acclaimed Norcott delivers a unique perspective on death and life in general in his Edinburgh 2012 show in progress. Including witty accounts of his personal crises while dealing with everyday life especially that relating to the death of his mother. This is a personable but relatable set, from comedy on the front line in Afghanistan, the adventures of Lilly the Cockapoo, a night in A and E to the simple anxiety of the guest bed, there is a crisis in here for everyone.

The occasional yet quirky use of music works well to bring us into Norcott’s state of mind while his flawless intuition of the audience’s humour creates a special atmosphere. Enhanced with significant tales; an unexpected medical problem, finding therapy, practical stages of grievance and been an adult, the material makes connections which brings a certain vulnerability to the audience.

This show demonstrates the healing power of comedy and the potential of the comedic function in ploughing through hard times. The only down fall was Norcott warning us of his previous shortcomings before the first laugh, giving the audience no benefit other than wondering are they in safe hands, luckily this is salvaged by Norcott’s nailing his set.

Although it lacks flow at points which could be attributed to it been a show in progress, the laughs just kept on coming and his connection with the audience keeps the focus throughout safe in the knowledge there are memorable anecdotes and laughs a plenty. With increasingly successful career on stage, T.V, radio and beyond, it is easy to see why Geoff Norcott is good in a crisis.”

The Noise Next Door - Their Finest Hour **** Chortle Review

the-noise-next-door-at-edi2The Noise Next Door - Their Finest Hour - 2011 Show Review
“sublime comedy” **** Chortle

Date of live review: Friday 5th Aug, ‘11
“It can be difficult reviewing shows on the first day of Fringe previews. Technically anyone who has said they are happy to be reviewed should be ready… but how many really are?

But if you’re using suggestions from the crowd as the basis of your show then every day is a first day. The only thing that improv troupe The Noise Next Door need to do by way of rehearsal is a bit of warming up, and on this opening afternoon they’re showing no signs of rust. The fact that they’ve been working as a team for six years shows they’re a tight group without a weak link.

They appear on stage in their trademark garb: all black but for a different coloured tie each. And though I say there are five members, there are technically seven this year; as the audience enter the room a Statler-and-Waldorf-style puppet duo wearing the same look banter with each other and anyone who might come too close while two of the full size members of the troop serenade us.

They kick off proper with a song, a fitting display of their talents as each one adopts an attribute of the audience’s ‘perfect partner’ – on this occasion that turns out to be a female spy with four legs who likes Pokemon and can pull a condom over her head. The routine is perfectly choreographed and expertly sung and though some of the impromptu lyrics are a touch predictable, the strained exclamation, ‘I can’t breathe!’ from Charlie as the personification of ‘pulled-condom-over-head’ is simple but effective. Of course a song is an effective and dynamic way to get the energy up from the start in a typical Fringe sweat box of a venue on an unusually sunny day.

The key improv games are familiar ones, suggestions from the crowd inform a scene and, on occasion, audience members are plucked out of their seats to help out. But Noise differ in that they have created their own games from the premise. An early game sees not one scene but five (though I may have lost count) cutting across each other thick and fast. A borrowed mobile phone from the crowd begins the story of Winnie the Pooh entering into a text exchange and a subsequent trip to Berlin and audience drawings inspire a whole ballet.

There are plenty of endearing asides between the players drawing you into their world; they good naturedly pull each other up commenting, ‘can’t believe you got away with that joke’ and purple-tie Tom self referentially comments that ‘I know way too much about this for a 26-year-old man’ as he displays an impressive knowledge of A.A. Milne’s most famous creation.

Throughout the show some of the off-the-cuff quips are obvious – an indie song about a relationship with a gruff lady fire fighter includes a fair few gags about sliding down poles – but the acting, musical and choreography skills more than make up for it.

Plus there are plenty of moments of sublime comedy in the show; the improvised ballet imprints a mental image of two of the players in leotards that you’re not likely to forget in a hurry, a ’serious’ scene policed by the crowd armed with water pistols ordered to shoot when they spot inevitable corpsing from the performers is great fun and the final skit featuring Obama in a lift with some magical characters from myth is as fantastic as it is simple.”

John Ryan: Comedy, rugby and men’s health!

Wednesday, January 5th, 2011 by comedy_admin

comedy-club-comedians-newsIF laughter is the best medicine, a new comedy night in Wigan could be just the tonic!

Organisers are hoping a mix of comedy and rugby league will ensure the borough’s blokes start thinking and talking about that most taboo of subjects…..their own health.

Top comedian John Ryan will poke some good natured fun at men’s attitude – or lack of it – to exercise….why blokes hate going to the doctors and why they simply can’t say what they feel.

They’ll also be able to meet Wigan Warriors players Pat Richards and Sean O’Loughlin and have their picture taken next to the Super League trophy.

Award winning comic John has performed in prisons, army bases, football clubs and art centres.

Mr Ryan said: “If I can people to laugh, I can get people to listen. It will be a great night of comedy, not preachy, just a laugh with a bit of a health message.”

During the night leaflets on everything from checking for testicular cancer to gym membership will be handed out to encourage men to think more seriously about their own health.

Organiser Jane Hynes is manager of the NHS-commissioned Community Weight Management service in Wigan. She said: “The night has been organised in response to men’s well-documented aversion to taking their health seriously.

“Making light of something can make it easier to talk about and hopefully the night will encourage men to take an interest in their own health and well-being.
“If we can make them laugh maybe we can break down some misconceptions such as ‘avoiding visiting the doctor makes you more manly’.
“Men need to take their health more seriously.”

Talkin’ Bol***ks has been organised by Wigan Leisure and Culture Trust’s Active Living Team in partnership with Age UK, NHS Ashton, Leigh and Wigan and Wigan Warriors to highlight some startling statistics.

In the UK life expectancy for men is 77.4 years compared to 81.6 years for women.

Middle aged men are twice as likely as women to have diabetes and twice as likely not to know they have it!

While 21 per cent of men die between the ages of 15 and 64 compared to just 12 per cent of women.

Roger Jones, national co-ordinator for Fit as a Fiddle Age UK, said: “This is part of our Fit as a Fiddle older men’s project which aims at getting the over 50s man healthy and active by providing activities which are fun and healthy but also have a strong social base which encourages men to work together and support each other.”

Talkin’ Bol***ks is being held at the DW Stadium on Thursday 27 January starting at 7pm.

George Michael’s Mental Anguish Discussed by John Ryan

So, George Michael received an 8 week sentence. We can joke about him singing ‘Freedom’ or ‘Lets go Outside’ but let’s face it he has lost his liberty and if he is lucky might get to go outside for short periods when he isn’t on a lock down. How will prison affect his mental health? The reality is that even with the right support he will have a tough time coping with being away from family, friends and the comforts of home. Anxiety and depression are a prisoner’s bedmates and the long term effects are the sort of things that Comedian john Ryan talks about in his shows ‘Cracking Up’ and ‘Beyond Prison’.
