Comedy Club News Update

Monday, January 10th, 2011 by comedy_admin

comedy-club-comedians-newsAwards ceremonies are traditionally an end of year thing…but the UK comedy circuit works a bit differently to that as the Chortle comedy awards kick off with Australian stand-up comedian Tim Minchin leading the nominations for the 2011 Chortle Awards in association with Universal. Heading the pack with 3 comedy award nominations including Best Tour, Best DVD and Best Musical and Variety Act, putting the talented Aussie comedian up against established names such as Bill Bailey to The Boy With Tape On His Face, a unique visual comedy act who’s profile raised significantly during the 2010 Edinburgh Comedy Festival.

Matt Lucas and David Walliams have received praise from Jim Davidson for their new comedy tv show Come Fly With Me. ‘We are a multi-racial society and we should celebrate the fact.’ Davidson adds that despite some critism of the programme that the comedians are racist to ‘black-up’ to play characters such as Taaj & Precious, ‘they are showing the characters you would expect to see at an airport and that includes people like Precious and Taaj. Wouldn’t just showing white characters at the airport be more racist?’. The praise from Davidson perhaps simply highlights a move back to common sense and away from political correctness which at times has strangled comedy, whether it’s a comedy sitcom or live stand-up comedy show.

Comedy News: Jonathan Ross To Host The British Comedy Awards

Worldwide Comedy News Updated Daily

Jonathon Ross will still host the British comedy awards after it’s move to channel 4.

Channel 4 has today confirmed that Jonathan Ross will continue to host the British Comedy Awards, days after securing a three-year deal to broadcast the show after a 20-year run on ITV.

The awards ceremony, created by veteran producer Michael Hurll and made by independent producer Unique Television, has traditionally been presented by Ross, apart from in 2008 when Angus Deayton hosted it after Ross stepped back following the row over his controversial Radio 2 broadcast with Russell Brand.

In 2007 the British Press Awards was not broadcast by ITV1 following phone-voting problems.

Channel 4, which is seen as a more natural home for the awards, with its reputation for risqué on-air incidents, has said that it will “revert to a post-watershed live broadcast, injecting spontaneity, excitement and edge into the new-look awards show”.

“The British Comedy Awards is national institution, and Jonathan Ross is an enormous part of what makes it such a consistently must-watch event,” said the Channel 4 head of comedy, Shane Allen. “We are thrilled that he will host our reinvigorated coverage.”
