Awards ceremonies are traditionally an end of year thing…but the UK comedy circuit works a bit differently to that as the Chortle comedy awards kick off with Australian stand-up comedian Tim Minchin leading the nominations for the 2011 Chortle Awards in association with Universal. Heading the pack with 3 comedy award nominations including Best Tour, Best DVD and Best Musical and Variety Act, putting the talented Aussie comedian up against established names such as Bill Bailey to The Boy With Tape On His Face, a unique visual comedy act who’s profile raised significantly during the 2010 Edinburgh Comedy Festival.
Matt Lucas and David Walliams have received praise from Jim Davidson for their new comedy tv show Come Fly With Me. ‘We are a multi-racial society and we should celebrate the fact.’ Davidson adds that despite some critism of the programme that the comedians are racist to ‘black-up’ to play characters such as Taaj & Precious, ‘they are showing the characters you would expect to see at an airport and that includes people like Precious and Taaj. Wouldn’t just showing white characters at the airport be more racist?’. The praise from Davidson perhaps simply highlights a move back to common sense and away from political correctness which at times has strangled comedy, whether it’s a comedy sitcom or live stand-up comedy show.
