Comedy News: A Little Bit OCD?

Tuesday, May 15th, 2012 by comedy_admin3

Ever wondered about Obsessive Complusive Disorder? Well your questions are about to be answered!

Jon Richardson is to make a Channel 4 programme about his obsessive-compulsive personality.

The show – which has the working title Jon Richardson: A Little Bit OCD – will form part of a week-long season about mental health conditions.

Channel 4 say the Eight Out Of Ten Cats regular will meet people across the OCD spectrum to ‘find out once and for all if he’s a simply a demanding perfectionist or has OCD’.

Richardson has previously said: ‘I never say I’m OCD, ‘cause I’m not diagnosed. But I certainly have compulsions about things that have made me…stab strangers.’

Ruby Wax is also hosting a show, provisionally called Mad Confessions, in which she follows a number of successful business people as they disclose a mental health condition to their employers, friends or family.

Wax herself has depression, which she has addressed in her stage show Losing It?

And in the flagship show of the TV season, 4 Goes Mad, eight potential employees, some of whom have a mental health condition, will be given a variety before a panel of employers, who decide who they could give a job to.

Channel 4 boss Jay Hunt said: ‘This year, we will tackle one of the biggest stigmas surrounding mental health by putting people with mental health conditions to work on Channel 4 shows and asking employers a simple question: We gave them a job; would you?’

Keep an eye out for the sure to be thought prevoking series soon!

Comedy News: Nick Frost’s New Film… Salsa Dancing

Friday, May 4th, 2012 by comedy_admin3

When you think of salsa, you immediately think of Nick Frost….yes?

Nick Frost and Chris O’Dowd are to star in a new British romantic comedy film set in the world of salsa dancing.

Cuban Fury is based on an idea by Frost, and will be written by Jon Brown, a TV writer whose credits include Miranda, Mongrels and Two Pints Of Lager.

Frost said he’d been training in salsa for months in preparation for the film. And he said the idea came out of his ‘weird fear of dancing’ which ‘spoilt his wedding’.

He said: ‘My aim with Cuban Fury was to make a romantic comedy with fiery Salsa at its heart. I wanted to show people that sometimes it’s not about a perfect nose and abs of steel, sometimes passion, soul and fire is enough. And in case you’re wondering yes, I’ll do all my own dancing.’

Also in the cast are Peep Show’s Olivia Colman and American actress Rashida Jones, from Parks And Recreations, who will play Frost’s boss.

The film will be produced by Big Talk – which also made the sci-fi comedy Paul with Frost and his long-time collaborator Simon Pegg – and will be part financed by Film4.

Producer Nira Park said the film was commissioned from a one-line pitch because ‘the idea of Nick dancing was funny’.

She added: ‘For as long as I can remember, I’ve wanted to make a dance movie. Even better a comedy dance movie. So when I received an email from Nick Frost which read: “how would you feel if I said we should do a film where I DANCE A LOT. Imagine me in tightly fitted sequinned garments with a lot of slow-mo”, I said: “I want the poster for that movie on my wall now!”

‘I can’t wait to see Nick in a role that will showcase all of his incredible talents as a performer, even those that have remained more hidden up to this point.’

‘Ross Noble Blasted for Teasing a Disabled fan with CP’

Friday, April 20th, 2012 by comedy_admin

A parent of a disabled child has gone to the press after top stand - up comedian Ross Noble joked about her sons loud laugh

Leslie Roberts was upset after she took her son Luke who is disabled with cerebral palsy to see Comedian Noble at his show at the Melbourne comedy festival. she felt his comments went too far.

She told the city’s Herald Sun newspaper: ‘When Luke laughs he does a gorgeous growl at the end and Ross said, “What the fuck was that?”, and went on to make extensive jokes about it.

‘I just want to say that there’s a point where you can go too far, and Ross a respected comedian really hurt a fan of his.’

Noble – who frequently weaves entire shows around his interactions with the audience – heard the distinctive laugh and had imagined there was a bear in the room.

The Stand up Comedian said he was saddened if any offence was caused, but added that he was not being malicious, nor highlighting his disability. ‘He has obviously misunderstood the spirit in which it was intended,’ Noble said.

And on his Twitter feed, the comedian added: ‘If you have cerebral palsy please come to my show sit in the front row you will be included in the show like everybody else.

‘If you find anything I say offensive prob. best to contact me about it rather than going to the press and getting them to pass on the message.’

Others and comedians defended Noble, including disability campaigner Stella Young, who said comics should treat disabled audience members like anyone else. ‘He wasn’t singled out because of his disability and he wasn’t excluded because of his disability,’ she said.

Comedian to Marry at the Comedy Store

Thursday, April 19th, 2012 by comedy_admin

To Stand -up comedian John Cooper it must feel a little weird getting married in the office!John is due to get hitched on stage at the Manchester Comedy Store.
Fellow comedian Jonathan Mayor will officiate as Cooper weds Brainne Edge, manager of the city’s improv troupe ComedySportz. The pair met six years ago when Cooper joined the group’s workshops – although they admit they ‘couldn’t stand each other’ at first.

‘The Comedy Store means so much to us both,’ said Brainne. ‘It’s pretty much where we met. The staff are amazing and the venue itself is just gorgeous, it made total sense to us to get married here.’

The pair are completing the legal paperwork today, as they could not get a marriage licence for the venue on the weekend. But Brainne she’d only be wearing jeans for the official form-filing because: ‘As far as we are concerned we are getting married on Sunday.’

BBC’s New Sketch show with ‘Real People’

Tuesday, April 17th, 2012 by comedy_admin

(b)BBC Three is piloting a new ‘reality’ sketch show – which will do away with Stand - Up comedians all

Boom Town will feature ‘real-life characters’ cast from all over the country with their own ‘catchphrases, eccentricities and larger than life personalities’, none of which will be scripted.

It will be set in one fictional town, with all the geographically diverse characters appearing to live there – thanks to cunning establishing shots and fake road signs.

The half-hour pilot follows the success of such ‘scripted reality’ shows as The Only Way Is Essex and Jersey Shore.

The BBC’s executive entertainment editor, Karl Warner, said: ‘Boom Town will be the first sketch show to make stars out of real people.

‘Some of the characters we’ve already met are laugh-out-loud funny and would sit well in any scripted comedy.

‘BBC Three is always keen to try trying new things and this feels like an original proposition which we’re looking forward to making with [production company] Knickerbockerglory.’

Executive producer Jonathan Stadlen added: ‘Using real people to create a documentary sketch show is a unique challenge from a genre point of view, but we are all really excited about working on such a radical departure in terms of form.

‘Boom Town sets out to play on the conventions of the comedy sketch show - and I really hope we can pull it off… to create a very different, and hopefully very funny, new genre of TV.’

Comedy News: Jo Brand to Host New Panel Show

Thursday, April 12th, 2012 by comedy_admin3

Top stand-up comic Jo Brand has been lined up as the host of a brand new panel show - all about classic comedy.

A pilot for the currently untitled project will be recorded later this month in central London, with guests including comic actor Miles Jupp.

Producers say the new programme includes “silly games, banter, and clips from some of the funniest TV shows ever made”, and invites contestants and audience members who know their Gavin & Stacey from their Only Fools And Horses, and their Fawlty Towers from their Office.

Although no further details have been confirmed at the time of reporting, the new format is believed to be a pilot for digital repeats channel GOLD, which has secured a “double-digit millions” budget for its own original programming commissions to mark its 20th year on air. The station began life in 1992 as UK Gold, and last month announced it had ordered a new, revived series of hit 1980s satire Yes, Prime Minister.

Whilst Brand presented docu-stand-up series Jo Brand’s Big Splash for GOLD’s sister channel, Dave, in September last year, GOLD themselves have covered this territory in the past.

2006 saw the channel - then known as UKTV Gold - broadcast 5 part comedy quiz show The Sitcom Showdown. Each episode saw two teams of fans, assisted by one celebrity proponent, battle in a number of rounds of trivia and general knowledge related to their chosen favourite sitcom, for that show to be named the greater of the two - for example, the first episode saw ‘Allo ‘Allo! win over Absolutely Fabulous.

The format was covered at much the same time by BBC Radio Wales panel show Jest A Minute, which was hosted by Rhod Gilbert.
