Jack Dee to Pilot New Sky TV Programme

January 18th, 2012 by comedy_admin

Top Stand-up Comedian Jack Dee could be hosting an all new comedy panel show, for Sky Atlantic it has just been revealled .

The Lead Balloon star last week made a pilot of the show called Don’t Sit In The Front Row, which will not be broadcasted.

The format has the panel of comedians – who included Phill Jupitus for the pilot – shaping routines based on information gleaned from people in the front row of the audience.

Producers Citrus Television have been working on the idea for a while, with a version featuring stand-up Jo Brand being in development as long ago as April 2010. Other pilots were scheduled last year.

Dee previously made a pilot of a topical panel show called Us Vs Them for Sky1 last year, but the idea was not picked up.

Lets hope this time Jack is back on our screens soon!

Comedy News: An Unlikely Duo Hit The Stage

January 18th, 2012 by comedy_admin3

Who would have thought that top comedian Joe Pasquale would be be paired up with Jesus! (Well the actor Robert Powell who played him anyway)

Fifties comedy hit Doctor In The House is being revived for the stage – featuring the unlikely duo of stand-up comedian Joe Pasquale and famous actor Robert Powell.

The play is based on Richard Gordon’s comic novels – which inspired the 1954 film Doctor In The House which made a star of Drik Bogarde, and spawned six sequels and an ITV sitcom.

The play opens at the Churchill Theatre, Bromley, on March 20 – the first of 14 week-long stint at theatres across the UK.

Joe Pasquale, 50, stars as a hapless ‘young’ medical student, facing constant run-ins with the irascible head surgeon Sir Lancelot Spratt, played by Powell, at the fictional St Swithin’s Teaching Hospital in London

Pasquale said: ‘I think it’s going to be a lot of fun to do, as I’ll be appearing alongside one of my idols, Robert Powell. What a legend! The 39 Steps, Jesus of Nazareth, The Survivor, Asylum, The Detectives… Now that’s a proper actor – looks like I’m going to be in good company.’

The cast also includes Emma Barton, who played Honey Mitchell in Eastenders for three years and Tom Butcher who was PC Steve Loxton in The Bill.

The dates are:

March 20-25: Churchill Theatre, Bromley
March 26-31: Theatre Royal, Windsor
April 2-7: Malvern Festival Theatre
April 10-15: Nottingham Theatre Royal
April 16-21: Kings Theatre Southsea
April 23-28: Venue Cymru, Llandudno
April 30-May 5: Chelmsford, Civic Theatre
May 21-26 Richmond Theatre
May 29-June 2: Theatre Royal Plymouth
June 11-16: Grand Theatre Wolverhampton
June 18-23: New Brighton Floral Pavillion
June 25-30: Theatre Royal Newcastle
July 2-9: Cambridge Arts Theatre
July 9-14: Colchester Mercury Theatre
July 16-21: Cheltenham Everyman Theatre

One great Stand-up comedian & a fine actor will surely create a masterpiece on stage!

Funny is in the eye of the beholder

December 7th, 2011 by comedy_admin

comedy-club-comedians-news
It is often commented that comedy has developed a fancy for swearing or offensive material rather than crafting good old fashioned comedy gold. Of course of what is funny lies in the eyes and ears of the beholder; the astronomical rise of comedy on TV and live stand-up comedy tours have made today’s most succesful comedians household names, and the success in many cases has been crafted in this new vein of comedy. David Jason raised the question commenting ‘In music hall days, and especially at the BBC, you were never allowed swear words so they came up with brilliant wheezes in Beyond Our Ken, The Goon Show and Round The Horne — “Hello, I’m Jules and this is my friend Sandy”. Everyone knew what it was about and the audience filled in the gaps.” ‘Today they push down the barriers. Take the F word. It’s become commonplace. Language has implications and it’s offensive if it’s meant to denigrate something or someone. Only Fools had nothing unpleasant, really.’

A subjective view but one held by one of the most respected comedians and actors to have graced stage and screen in the last half century. What is certain though is the it’s audience reaction that ensures the success or demise of a comedian and to any given individual, ‘funny is funny’ but might not be funny to others.

Dave’s Funniest Joke of The Fringe Award

August 31st, 2011 by comedy_admin

comedy-club-comedians-newsbest-jokes-of-the-festThe Edinburgh Festival Fringe has for 31years been renouned for launching the biggest stars of the UK comedy circuit and attracting the biggest names in comedy from across the world. Beneath all the media scramble, there is of course a thick seam of supreme joke writing and delivery which now has it’s own award crowning the Funniest Joke of The Fringe Award as sponsored by Dave.

Nick Helm takes home the spoils this year with over one quarter of the votes with 3,000. Helm commented: ‘I knew my joke was the funniest joke of all the other jokes in 2011. Thank you to Dave and all the people that voted for proving me right.’

The Top 10 funniest jokes were:
1. Nick Helm: ‘I needed a password with eight characters – so I picked Snow White and the Seven Dwarves.’
2. Tim Vine: ‘Crime in multi-storey car parks. That is wrong on so many different levels.’
3. Hannibal Buress: ‘People say, “I’m taking it one day at a time.” You know what? So is everybody. That’s how time works.
4. Tim Key: ‘Drive Thru McDonalds was more expensive than I thought… once you’ve hired the car…’
5. Matt Kirshen: ‘I was playing chess with my friend and he said, “Let’s make this interesting”. So we stopped playing chess.’
6. Sarah Millican: ‘My mother told me, you don’t have to put anything in your mouth you don’t want to. Then she made me eat broccoli, which felt like double standards.’
7. Alan Sharp: ‘I was in a band which we called The Prevention, because we hoped people would say we were better than The Cure.’
8. Mark Watson: ‘Someone asked me recently – what would I rather give up, food or sex. Neither! I’m not falling for that one again, wife.’
9. Andrew Lawrence: ‘I admire these phone hackers. I think they have a lot of patience. I can’t even be bothered to check my OWN voicemails.’
10. DeAnne Smith: ‘My friend died doing what he loved… Heroin.’

However there was also a runaway winner of the proverbial wooden spoon ‘Worst Joke’ award; this year going to Paul Daniels for his joke ‘I said to a fella, “Is there a B&Q in Henley” He said “No, there’s an H, an E, an N an L an E and a Y…’
- This probably got a laugh each night, but for all the wrong reasons!
